Co–workers of George Whitesides have reason to be proud. They created the
technology behind new non-profit company Diagnostics–For–All, which
just took top prizes in both the
MIT 100K and
Harvard business
plan contests. Not only is Diagnostics–For–All the first company
ever to win both competitions, they are the first company based on Harvard
innovation – from CCB –– to win the Social Enterprise contest at
Harvard Business School. Based on a new generation of devices microfabricated and
patterned in paper, DFA's technology is meant to enable tools for diagnosing
ailments including liver, kidney, and metabolic diseases that are easy to use,
cheap, portable, and disposable. The technology will benefit the developing world,
and also the U.S. where there is a great need to find ways of reaching the poor
and underserved, explains T.J. Martin, lab administrator of the Whitesides group.
Congratulations to CCB graduate students Mark Chen, Meredeth McGowan, and Landy Blasdel, who have been selected as recipients of the 2008 Roche Excellence in Chemistry Award!
Shuyu Wang, a graduating senior in the Verdine Group, was one of ten students, and the only
American, honored for excellent poster presentations at the German Chemical Society-sponsored
10th Young Scientists Conference on Chemistry, held in March at the University of Rostock.
Ray Moellering of the Verdine group won the Vertex Excellent Graduate Student Research Award,
presented by the ACS Northeast Section's Younger Chemists Committee at its 10th Annual Student

The April 23rd edition of C&E reports the following presentation
of Prof. George Whitesides as recipient of the ACS Priestley Medal,
by President Catherine Hunt: “It isn’t often that one has the
opportunity to introduce a legend. But tonight, I have the distinct
honor of introducing a legend in chemistry. In all fairness, I
should say a legend in physical and organic chemistry, materials
science, biophysics, bioorganic chemistry, biotechnology, surface
science, self-assembly, nanotechnology, microfluidics … Well, anyway,
you get the idea. George’s contributions are encyclopedic. He has
more than 900 published articles to his credit. And his name and
papers are always at or near the top of the list for citation counts
and Impact Factor. In fact, George is ranked first on the list of
“The Most Cited Researchers in Chemistry” compiled by
“in cites” — a Web component of Thomson Scientific’s
“Essential Science Indicators.” George has mentored more
than 300 graduate students, postdocs, and visiting scholars. George
Whitesides takes an active role in the public policy arena for science
and technology. In fact, he serves as chair of the National Academy’s
Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy.”
Congratulations, George!

titled "Under the Microscope: A Brief History of Microscopy." The book outlines the
history of the development of microscopy, from the use of beads and water droplets
in ancient Greece, through the simple magnifying glass, to the modern compound
microscope. The technology and optical theory are developed in a straightforward
manner, and this leads to a description and explanation of the most modern technologies
in electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy as well as the new scanning probe
microscopies. A series of very interesting applications of the various microscopic techniques are
described. The most recent pioneering techniques in near field and confocal optical microscope
