Department Facilities and Resources

The Chemical Laboratories of Harvard University are the major part of the Cabot Sciences Complex. The 265,000 sq. ft. of modern research laboratories offered by the Department are housed in five buildings, Edward Mallinckrodt Chemical Laboratory, James Bryant Conant Laboratory, Converse Memorial Laboratory, Naito Laboratory, and Bauer Laboratory. These buildings are conveniently located in a group with the Fairchild Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and with the Hoffman Geological Laboratories. Undergraduate instruction for Harvard College is conducted in the adjacent Cabot Science Center. Nearby are the Biological Laboratories, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Physics Laboratories.

Harvard University's Libraries hold more than 15.8 million volumes and are rooted in the 1638 bequest of 400 books from John Harvard. Today's collections include journals, primary source materials, images, audio and video recordings, and digital resources that span a wide range of subjects, languages, and dates. Harvard has more than 80 libraries gathered into a single system that constitutes the largest academic library in the world. The Chemistry Library, housed in the Converse Memorial Laboratory, has long been recognized as one of the country's best. Its primary goal is to support the research of the faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students.

The Department offers wired and wireless networks providing internet access and local connectivity to more than 1000 individual, research group, and departmental workstations

The analytical instrumentation center located in Naito and Bauer Laboratories provides a convenient location for many of the Department's sophisticated and powerful research instruments. These include nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers; mass spectrometers optimized for analysis of biomolecules or small molecules; chromatography and sequencing equipment; and single crystal X-ray diffractometers. A separate powder X-ray diffractometry facility contains equipment for the analysis of thin films and solids.

The nearby Laboratory for Integrated Science and Engineering holds facilities for nanofabrication, materials synthesis, imaging, and computer analysis and design of nanoscale systems, including the following instrumentation: ellipsometers; scanning electron, transmission electron, optical, and environmental scanning electron microscopes; focused ion beam systems; chemical and physical vapor deposition systems; furnaces; and equipment for surface analysis, thermal analysis, advanced optical imaging, and lithography.

Other more specialized instrumentation or research equipment is available in specific research groups. From the section on faculty research you will find more detail on each research group's instrumentation resources.
