CCB Laboratory Safety Training

All persons who wish to conduct research in the Dept. of CCB must receive laboratory safety training. Incoming graduate students receive this training during their orientation week in August. Other researchers (e.g. post-docs, undergraduates, inter-departmental visitors) must attend one of the monthly training sessions. Topics discussed include emergency procedures, hazardous waste management, and chemical and physical hazards in the laboratory.

Training sessions are scheduled at 2-4PM in 102 Converse Lab (conference room) on the following dates:

  • May 21, 2008
  • June 18, 2008
  • July 16, 2008
  • August 20, 2008
  • September 17, 2008
  • October 15, 2008
  • November 19, 2008
  • December 17, 2008

Hazardous Waste Training

Harvard laboratory researchers must complete yearly online hazardous waste refresher training. Visit this link, sign in using your Harvard PIN, and select "FAS-Chemistry and Chemical Biology." Review all of the material presented and take the “Challenge” at the end.

Laser Safety Training

Researchers must complete laser safety training before work with lasers commences. The training can be completed by attending a classroom lecture. Training schedules can be found here.

Harvard and Massachusetts regulations require that all Class 3B and 4 laser users complete a laser eye examination before a person begins work with a laser. Information regarding these examinations can be found here.

Biosafety Training

Researchers must complete Biosafety training before work in a Biohazard Level 2 laboratory begins. Biosafety training is presented as the second half of the MCB Lab Safety program, typically given on the third Friday of every month. For the training schedule can be found here.

Radiation Safety Training

Researchers must complete radiation safety training before work with radioactive materials commences. The training can be completed on-line or by attending a classroom lecture. Information and schedules can be found here.

Fire Safety Training

Only trained individuals should attempt to fight a fire. Environmental Health & Safety will be offering hands-on fire extinguisher training using the BullEx Digital Safety Fire Extinguisher (http://www.bullexsafety.com). Experience the feel of extinguishing a fire.

Training will review emergency evacuation procedures, the use and application of various classes of fire extinguishers, the limitations of fire extinguishers and the proper techniques to extinguish a fire. Each participant will fight a simulated fire. The 2008 schedule can be found here.
